When Franklin Roosevelt was elected US President in 1932, Amelia made frequent visits to the White House, where she got to know the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Amelia discovered that they were very alike, with their independent natures and competitive and sporting accomplishments. There were still many things that the First Lady wanted to do. One wish was to learn to fly, something for which she needed the president’s support, but it was not forthcoming. However, the First Lady was to be in for a surprise in the near future.

Amelia and George were invited to the White House as overnight guests in April 1933 and during dinner Amelia asked the First Lady if she had ever experienced night flying. Eleanor said she had not and Amelia, who had already arranged with Eastern Airlines to loan her a Condor aircraft and a crew, took Eleanor Roosevelt, still in evening dress, to the airport. They took off and flew over Washington and Baltimore, giving the First Lady her first experience of a night flight.
